As part of the EU-funded AutoTRUST project, Klaus-Peter Wegge and Markus Dubielzig from the Siemens Accessibility Competence Center in Germany were at InnoTrans 2024 to explore accessibility solutions for public transport. InnoTrans is the worldwide biggest leading international trade fair for transport technology and takes place every two years in Berlin. This year, 2940 exhibitors from 59 countries presented their remarkable inventions. The trade fair attracted a record number of around 170,000 visitors from 133 countries.

Two innovations in the field of autonomous mobility solutions stood out during our visit:

  • A/PURE Shuttle from Toray Industries : This self-driving shuttle combines sustainable materials such as vegan leather and Ultrasuede with innovative, accessible design. Features such as wheelchair spaces, ramps and wireless charging make it a user-centric solution that combines comfort and environmental awareness.
  • KIRA - Level 4 autonomous driving : With KIRA, the RMV (Rhine-Main Transport Network) and partners are testing autonomous driving in regular service in the Rhine-Main region from 2024. These on-demand shuttles, which can be booked via an app, are particularly important for rural areas and demonstrate how artificial intelligence and sensor technology such as lidar and radar can make mobility safer.

Even though it is essential for people with reduced mobility, it is notable that accessibility plays a minor role in the field of autonomous vehicles. For example, the mobile application for booking a ride with AVs is not accessible at all. \n\n More information at: [KIRA – Autonomes Fahren & APURE - Autonomous Vehicle Premium Urban Riding Ecosystem]
